As Karen demonstrated on April 29th on Wellness Works NW’s YouTube Channel having good posture is important. This article is going to explain why it is important for us to have good posture when we walk, sit, and sleep.

Posture is the position we hold our bodies while we are standing, sitting, or lying down. We need to have correct alignment of our body parts so that our muscles are supported by the right amount of tension and gravity. When we aren’t in alignment that is when back issues happen. It also keeps bones and joins in alignment so that our muscles and ligaments are being used correctly so that it reduces the stress on them and this reduces injuries.

 Here are some facts:

  • 65 millions American have back pain.
  •  Low back pain is common for those who are under 45
  •  80 percent of Americans will suffer back pain in their life

There are two types of posture: Dynamic and Static

  • Static posture is non moving and happens when you sit, lie down, or sleep.
  • Dynamic posture happens when you walk, run, or any movement you do.

As we age our body changes, we lose height. When we lose height our lungs and abdominal organs caused by the height loss causes heart disease, stroke, and respiratory issues, because they become compact. So working on posture while your body changes will help you with these things.

Here are some reasons to improve your posture:

  • To have pain free movement and flexibility
  • Better balance and coordination
  • Higher energy levels
  • Elevated confidence
  • Reduced stress and anxiety
  • Peak athletic performance
  • Ability to breath deeply
  • Youthful appearance
  • Stay active longer as we age

Some strong posture exercises include yoga, tai chi, and pilates.

Finally, here are some tips to help you:

  • Move every 30 minutes especially if you work at a desk or sit for long periods of time
  • Strengthen your core muscles
  • Work on your balance and take the stairs
  • Check your ergonomics to make sure your desk, chair and bed are at the right height for you
