There you guys are! How are you feeling? It’s summertime. Things are going good and you are back! Yes! I am Karen with Wellness Works NW and today I want to talk to you about Good Gut Health, not your butt this time, but your gut. You know how it is when you have a really bad stomach ache and nothing is going right. It is so frustrating.
One thing that we like to do at Wellness Works NW is make it kind of a wellness breeding ground, if you will. When you are thinking about something you want to know more about I want you to go to our Healthy Living Blogs Page and read articles. [You can also request topics to be researched for FREE] We have all kinds of great information there. Jamie Holloway, our Research Manager, has just written a really good article that went live on Tuesday called: Book Review: The Gut Friend Cookbook by Alan Scott.
We find that people that are chronically ill, often times have some GI problems. We wanted to put together several different articles about Crohn’s, which is basically a really bad chronic disease that many people have. We’ve put together stuff about IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), that type of information, because we know many people have issues with reflux (GERD), you could go on and one. We have found that the stomach is where immune system is centered. So healthy gut, healthy life. That is what this cookbook is trying to teach us about.
Jamie has provided a great review on the book, so you can learn about it and maybe even check out the book. If you are trying to think about what you can eat, now that everything seems to be bothering your stomach now. If you have indigestion or similar issues, this book might really help you. Why your stomach is hurting could be a myriad of different things. If you are having chronic stomach aches, please get in to see the doctor. There are several things they can do, even putting a scope down your esophagus. I have had that test done. When you hit 50, they find all kinds of tests you need to get done. Preventive care is king!
It is good to learn new foods that you can cook and eat that will help your body, When the author, Alana Scott put this book together, she was trying to put something together to help people, like her, that have food allergies.
We really try to give you good information on our website as a resource. Sometimes supplements work well. We have to find what works for you. Ginger is often good for your GI tract. I would like to recommend you start keeping a food journal so you can keep track of what is causing you difficulties. This will help you see what you may need to eliminate out of your diet. Please check it out and let us know what you think about it.
If you need help with your wellness plan please send me an email.
A lot of times we have problems with our stomach because we are tense. This is a byproduct of chronic illness and stress. I want to show you a few yoga poses that you can do that help you relax. Today Karen is going to show Downward Facing Dog, a variation of a Cat Claw, Upward Facing Dog and the Warrior Stance. Remember to breathe when you are stretching and exercising.
Please check in with your doctor if you are feeling pain. I am so glad that you are here. I am sending positive prayers and vibes.
If you want to follow Karen during her Challenge 22 please make sure to check out her personal Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/KarenGidderonClemenson. Make sure to send her a message if you want to join the challenge to encourage Veterans who are experiencing mental crisis.
CORRECTION: Before we began talking about Challenge 22 we blindly called it Mission 22, without checking to see if that name was being used for something else. Wellness Works NW wants to apologize to Mission 22®. We are thankful they understood that we meant no malice and support their wonderful work with Veterans. Please check out their website at Mission22.com for more details about what they do to help our veterans.
[If you want to be part of this challenge shoot me a message on Facebook. We also considered that some people may not be able to do 22 push ups and since the goal is to encourage veterans who are struggling we want to encourage people who agree to be called out to choose 22 of any exercise they can do well for 22 days…and no you don’t have to do the same exercise for 22 days in a row, feel free to vary it up. We will only call you out if you say you will do the challenge.]

Karen understands that your physical wellness does not begin and end with your membership to a local gym. She knows that weight loss management begins with steps; some small and some large. These steps include diet, physical activity and retraining of the thoughts and habits that keep you from being successful on your path toward wellness.
