Hi! It’s Karen with Wellness Works NW. It is almost time for baseball and we believe that my Cowlitz Black Bears are coming back this year! We are not sure but we hope so. The owner and coach of the Black Bears is really excited.
June is National Men’s Health month. We have our cousins, husbands, brothers and friends who sometimes don’t take care of themselves and we need to give them a little push to remind them to get their health in order. Eating better can be a real change and we need to encourage them to make healthier choices and maybe cut back on some of the less healthy things they are eating and drinking.
We want to encourage all our male friends to go into the doctor and get everything checked out by the the doctor: cholesterol, a1c, high blood pressure. Has he been having pains he hasn’t told you about? It is really important to work on preventive care.
When it comes to sports we know that most of guys really love sports. They love to get out there and play really hard, but when you haven’t been moving very much and then you suddenly do this, sometimes it doesn’t go as well as we want it to. You need to be really careful and make sure you start moving carefully until you are ready to move more. Start with stretching to protect that back.
As women we tend to do a more detailed job with managing our health and we need to be helping our guys manage their health better too. When it comes to eating there are foods that we especially find at that ball park, like hot dogs, that we need to help encourage ourselves to be mindful of. Think about how you can make some good swaps. Maybe you need a meal plan. If you are having any aches and pains please find someone to talk to and make your wellness happen.
Today we are working with a kettle weight. You can have a whole workout with just a kettle weight. It is old technology but it works really well. Make sure to have your legs a good hips width apart when you use this tool.
Make sure to squeeze your butt when you can! It is especially good to use as many muscle groups at one time as you can. When you are just starting out you want to start small, like 10 reps at first and then when you can do that well, increase your reps.

Karen understands that your physical wellness does not begin and end with your membership to a local gym. She knows that weight loss management begins with steps; some small and some large. These steps include diet, physical activity and retraining of the thoughts and habits that keep you from being successful on your path toward wellness.
