Hey Everybody! This is Karen from Wellness Works NW. It is getting kind of cold, isn’t it? It is coming into the time of the year that we start thinking about our health because we are having a good time and we are going to enjoy things like Thanksgiving and Christmas and all kinds of holidays. This year things will be a little different this year but still we will be enjoying ourselves so you still have to watch it. And what does that mean? You need to get your checkups.
When you think about it, a lot of times there are male diseases and female diseases, we think, but that is just not necessarily true. As a matter of fact, The American Cancer Society is trying to do just a little more information so that people realize that we can share things, bad things, unfortunately, like men can get breast cancer. There have been lots of men that have had breast cancer so we are trying to encourage men to get to the doctor and make sure things are ok. Often times when men get cancer, just like when women get cancer, it starts in the ducts. You also need to inspect the aureolas and everything, just like a woman would. It is very very important to do that.
There have been several men that have contracted breast cancer. There are all kinds of ad campaigns related to male breast cancer when you go to the American Cancer Society website. So guys, if you are watching and you are not sure, maybe you have some discoloration or lumps, don’t just say, there is nothing to it. Go to the doctor and get it checked out.
There are several well-known men that have had breast cancer, like, Richard Roundtree. He was famous in the 1970’s for Shaft. That was just an interesting group of movies and people really enjoyed him, he was a great actor. He got breast cancer, and if I not mistaken, he did die with breast cancer.
Note: Roundtree was diagnosed with male breast cancer in 1993 and underwent a double mastectomy and chemotherapy. He is still alive and well…
Other famous men who had male breast cancer include: Edward Brooke, who was the first black senator in 1967. Peter Criss who was with the band, Kiss. Breast cancer can affect anybody so if you are having odd feelings or something doesn’t seem right, just go see your doctor. Don’t be too shy and let yourself think that men cannot get sick.
Other symptoms of breast cancer are: dimpled area around the nipple, puckered skin around the aureolas. Please do something about it.
The cancer that most men get when they get breast cancer is called infiltrating ductal carcinoma. These are things you can Google. Take a minute to look into it.
Now the Christmas season is here and we are all feeling a really good and little giddy but the best thing you can give to yourself is good health. That includes taking care of yourself. When you need a checkup, bam! You go do that. You make it happen.
And you knew I was getting to it…that’s right! Exercising! You can definitely exercise. It is very very important to do, especially now that many of us cannot get out like we would normally get out. You can’t go to your gym or anything but don’t let that bother you. It’s good to a short walk, get your cardio going, get out and do things. It is also important that you have your own home program. You can make it up as you go or if you need some advice, you can give me a call at 360-447-8067 and I can help you out.
Send me an email. Pop me an email and we can talk about your questions. Let’s have a conversation.
Now we are going to do a few exercises. I am going to grab my 5 lb weights and we are going to do some Calf Raises. Your calves are important for keeping you stable. If you have ever pulled your calf it is probably because we haven’t stretched right. I am going to assist myself with my weights. Hold your weights in your hands and come up on your toes, nice and slow. The fact that you have these weights really helps you with resistance. Your calves love that!
Now we are going to do some Clam Shells. I am going to get on the floor. Lie on your back, with your knees bent, bring your legs up. Keep your arms out to your side with a weight in each hand. Bring your bent legs over to the right so they are almost touching the floor. Next, come back to the center and then, nice and easy, bring your bent legs down to the left, just above the floor. That is a good stretch! Do about 10 of those.
Then we are going to do some Goblet Squats. Put one weight down and hold the other one with both hands, in front of you. Line your feet up, at about a shoulder’s width apart. Sit back in those heals. Sometimes squats can be difficult at first, but keep trying. Make sure to set your weight in your heals. You can do about 10 of those too.
These are a few exercises that you can start your home routine with. Guys remember to take care of yourself. You take care of everyone else and you need to take care of you too.
I am sending all kinds of prayers and positive vibes. See you soon! If you need any help just go to our Resources page.
