Warning: I am not a medical professional and if you want to take this type of medication, I recommend you discuss this with your doctor before trying it.

I live with several chronic illnesses and a trach tube where I have to have a large volume nebulizer compressor machine by my head, and this makes sleeping well a huge challenge for me. I have learned to live with this aspect of my life. At the end of October while I was in the hospital, I was given melatonin to help me with sleep. It worked for me and I did not feel drugged. When I have tried sleeping aids before, I always have felt drugged and I would sleep for days instead of just the 8 hours. This time that did not happen. I have been taking melatonin for a month now and I am getting good sleep. Yes, I still wake up coughing and having to suction but I can go back to sleep in a reasonable amount of time.

Melatonin is a hormone that the body makes to help with sleep. As we get older, we have a reduction in melatonin and so that is where the supplement comes in. I am using a 3MG tab and the brand I am using is Nature’s Bounty that I bought at Walmart Marketside Market. If you are a diabetic or are taking blood pressure medication be watchful of them and start at the lowest dose. The lowest dose I have found is 3 MG. Also do not forget to have it listed on your medications list for your doctor and medical team.

One thing that people should know about taking melatonin is that you need to take it several hours before bed. I usually take it around 6 PM so that I am ready to be in bed by 10PM. I love that I do not feel like I am drugged when I wake up in the morning. There are some side effects, and this could be a sign that you are taking too high of a dosage. These symptoms are:

  • Headache
  • Nasua
  • Dizziness

I have not experience any of these symptoms, thank goodness.
