June is Men’s Health Month and the goal for this month is to heighten the awareness of getting men to consider living well by having early detection tests and getting treatment for diseases they may have. In 1994 Bill Clinton established Men’s Health Month.
Men go to the doctor less than men do. Women are 100% likely to see a doctor while men are only 39% likely. That is why when men do decide to go to the doctor it is more serious of a condition. I know we all have men in our lives that we love and value so maybe we can encourage them to get tests and preventive care so that they won’t get more serious conditions.
In this video Karen G Clemenson has something to say about Men’s Health Month:
Here are the most common health conditions for men:
- Atherosclerosis: The hardening of arteries which leads to strokes and heart disease.
- Stroke: 796,000 people have a stroke a year. Every 4 minutes someone dies from a stroke.
- Heart disease: 347,000 men die a year from heart disease
- Lung Cancer: 116,300 men get diagnosed with lung cancer a year and 72,500 men die.
- Prostate Cancer: 191,930 get diagnosed a year
- Depression and Suicide: 100,00 men commit suicide a year. 16.2 million people a year have depression.
- Diabetes: 29.1 million people get diagnosed with diabetes a year.
- Erectile dysfunction: Caused because the arteries are hardening. 5% of men 40 years of age and older have this condition.
- Aids/HIV: 69% of those diagnosed are men from the ages of 15 to 29.
- Hearing loss: Men are 2 times likely to lose their hearing than women
- Men die five years earlier than women
