Supplements come in the form of pills, capsules, pills, powders, gel tabs, extracts or liquids. You might use dietary supplements to add nutrients to your diet or to lower your risk of health problems, like osteoporosis or arthritis. There are many theories about whether we should take supplements. Supplements are as personal as your underwear (to borrow a phrase from Karen G Clemenson) and whether to take them or not is, also, just as personal.
If you do choose to take supplements it is important to do your research very carefully and talk with your doctor about what you are taking or thinking of adding to your wellness regime. Your medical team will be able to evaluate your needs and even prescribe particular tests to measure your success, or lack of success, to help you make the best decisions about your health. For instance Summer found that taking a ketones supplement did nothing for her, yet many people have had great success with this supplement. Summer was also told by her rheumatologist that she should not take echinacea when she has cold symptoms because it makes another medication she requires less effective, however, Karen is glad to be able to take it and it has proven to shorten the time she requires to heal from cold and flu symptoms.
